Creating a safer future for children and young people starts with good data. However, the current child protection system is disjointed, with multiple datasets and standards.

1. Who we are

Childlight is a global child safety institute based at the University of Edinburgh.

For the purposes of data protection law, the data controller for this website is:

  • Submit an enquiry via our contact form
  • Register for events or webinars
  • Sign up to receive updates from us

Depending on how you interact with us, this may include:

  • Country/region
  • Industry
  • Any information you provide in free-text fields (e.g. questions submitted for events)
  • Optional: company name and telephone number

3. How your information is usedWe use your information to:

  • Respond to enquiries
  • Manage event or webinar registrations and attendance
  • Communicate important event-related information

If you choose to opt in, we will also use your email address to:

  • Send updates about future events, webinars, and relevant news from Childlight

We do not use your data for profiling or automated decision-making.

We process personal data under the following legal bases:

  • Legitimate interests — to respond to enquiries and manage event registrations
  • Consent — where you have opted in to receive email updates or marketing communications

5. How your data is stored

  • Your message is sent via email to our team
  • It may be stored within the University of Edinburgh’s secure email systems
  • We do not store this data in a website database
  • Event registration data may also be processed using third-party platforms (e.g. Microsoft Events or Teams), which operate under their own privacy and security policies.

6. How long we keep your data

We retain enquiry emails only as long as necessary to:

  • Respond to your request
  • Maintain appropriate records of correspondence

7. Sharing your data

Your data may be shared:

  • Within the University of Edinburgh where necessary to deliver services
  • With trusted IT and service providers (e.g. email and event hosting platforms)

We do not sell your personal data or share it with third parties for marketing purposes. You will only receive marketing communications from us if you have explicitly opted in.
